Newby seeks help & advice

Post by jpmccusa » Sun Jul 04, 2010 2:33 am

Here are the problems I've run into:

1. How do I block the spaces left for Flash items? I don't even want to KNOW that Flash was present on a page, so no big gaps with red x please!

2. I want to open new stuff as a new window, not a Tab. How do I disable tabs completely?

3. I am on dialup and use an accelerator. Graphics are poor unless I choose to see the original image --- but how do I select that here?

4. Many images still come through the AD Blacklist --- how do I foolproof this so I can block banners for keeps?

When Avant blocks a Flash object it does not replace it with a red cross, but with an empty space.
Possible reasons that you are seeing the cross are are:

- You have a third party component replacing the Flash with a cross placeholder. Please compare what is displayed with Internet Explorer. Avant and IE use the same web page renderer.

- You do not have Flash installed at all. In this case, the IE rendering engine places an cross there before Avant can process it. Install Flash player then instruct Avant to block Flash animations.

The whole reason for Avant originally was to be tab based browser and not multi-windowed. You cannot disable tabs completely, but you can open a new Avant instance from the menu: File >> New Avant Browser

Exactly the same way as you would with Internet Explorer - if it is even possible at all.

If only one could foolproof these things. Adding more rules to the built-in blockers is a start. But really you will need to use one (or more) third party components in addition to Avant's own filtering, such as hpHosts or Adblock IE. There are plenty of others and a lot are not free.

Using a hosts file will block a lot of third party servers from downloading a lot of ads to the site you are viewing.

Also most hosts file block a lot of malicous sites. However, some browsers wait a good while to load when the site is requesting ads from third party servers.

I understand Opera for one waits a good while.

To negate this, use "Edexter" a tiny http server, With Edexter your loading speed is very good

Edexter installs it self. Quite simple. There are a lot of good hosts files out there.

I use the one from http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
