Avant Version:

Suddenly unable to access web pages

Post by RVnPapa » Thu Jun 28, 2007 3:07 pm

I am running version 11.5 build 11 and also occurs in 11.5 build 9, IE7 with latest MS updates. Hardware is a Dell 1000 with 512 MB ram.

Avant has been running great for a long time and I updated to 11.5 build 11 which worked for a day but now whenever I try to display a web page I get a screen
This program cannot display the web page

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

What you can try:
Check your Internet connection. Try visiting another website to make sure you are connected.

Retype the address.

Go back to the previous page.

More information

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:

Internet connectivity has been lost.
The website is temporarily unavailable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain.

This occurs even when I try to display the web page of my router by entering the TCIP address!

IE7 works just fine.

I have uninstalled 11.5 build 11 via control panel add remove programs and installed 11.5 build 9 that has been running OK for several weeks. No change.

I can see text change in the status line after the waiting for http;//www.google.com but it flashes by so fast that I cannot read what it says.

Thanks in advance,
Bob

Tthree thoughts--have you tried chaning your proxy setting under Tools. Is it possible your Firewall is blocking it, in which case remove the old permissions for Avant and restart (the only problem with this one is that it did work for a day). The third idea is an old fix--change the name of avant.exe in the program folder to iexplore.exe. That will also give you access to some of IE7's upgrades, if you want them.

Let us know if any of these work.

Sara :D

 Disabling Zonealarm PRO and enabling MS firewall has resolved the problem. Avant is allowed for everything according to the program allows BUT Zonealarm PRO is blocking outgoing traffic for AVANT. Thanks for the advice

I had to re-install ZoneAlarm PRO using the 'fresh' install instead of using the 'upgrade' option and all is well!

I use Zone Alarm free version, and I suspect the solution would be close enough to being the same...

Go to Control Center, Programs tab - and delete all references to Avant.

If this does solve the problem (if it should occur again), check ZA's settings. It does recognize that Avant has changed and as a result is blocking all access. ZA is SUPPOSED to notify you of this change and offer you the option of allowing access. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that one of ZA Pro's "features" is the ability to silence these requests (a bad feature, IMHO, if it does exist)

BTW... if you mean Windows firewall - don't trust it at all. It allows all outgoing traffic - always.
