So what's the deal with Orca then?

Post by Quan » Wed Jul 23, 2008 7:22 pm

I'm a big Firefox fan, so I'm really curious about spin offs. My understanding is a lot of work went in to integrating it in to the Avant project. So a few questions:

Other than the UI how is it different to Firefox? (although very obviously not a skin change because middle clicking on the home button doesn't make it open in a new tab :-( )

What's the long term plan?

How open source is it? (obviously there's legal requirements if your using the Gecko engine)

Or where can I find out about this information?

:D Thanks for any info you can give me, quite excited to see another good browser come to the market.

Here's what I know.

Other than the UI, there isn't any difference. There are some reports of it being faster than Firefox 3 mainly because the interface isn't using XML, CSS, Javascript, and DOM to be rendered.

It will be kept up-to-date from this point on. The previous version (latest was 1.0 RC 3) was scrapped late in `05 for this version. There were even some rumors of Avant and Orca being merged into one browser with support for both Trident and Gecko but I doubt we will ever see that.

As long as nothing is changed from the official Gecko files, the browser can remain completely closed source as long as a link is provided to where you can find the source for Gecko.

Thanks loads, that answers a lot of the questions I had about it.

I assumed the the Gecko engine had been modified because of people talking about it going "faster", but that answers a lot thanks.
