Favicons anyone?

Post by baldrn » Thu Dec 18, 2003 12:53 pm

Running the newest non-beta 8.02 build 207. skin is office xp. I don't have ANY favicons.(well in the tabs I do) but I thought by now they'd be in the links/favorites menu.
I tried installing faviconizer, but it is a bad dnld or something. I extracted it's files but there is no setup/start/file.
I have read the posts about the favicon trouble, but some people are getting them. If it's skin related, which skins better accept them than the office xp?
TIA
Mousetater

Try Favorg. The third on on the page is the latest build that you don't have to pay for. I couldn't get Favicon to run either.

The favicons in the favorites menu work as they do in IE. Meaning, only newly added favorites will show a favicon and that they are eventually deleted as your temporary internet files are cleared. So, if you would like your favicons to remain indefinitely then you'll need a tool like FavOrg or Faviconizer. :wink:

You could try repairing your icon cache with tweakui available here:

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui

It installs on your control panel.

A word of warning on using the "Repair Icons" option of tweakui: it will, under XP at least, remove the saved positions of your desktop icons, and display them up and down starting in the upper left corner of your desktop. Before doing this, using a utility such as the free Iconoid http://www.sillysot.com/ or WinTidy http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,367,00.asp which used to be free and now requires a pcmag or utility library subscription.

Can anyone tell me exactly where Favicons are assigned to the individual URL shortcuts. There seems like there should be a registry entry or file that essentially says "this icon goes with this interenet shortcut", but I cannot seem to figure out what the mechanism is. :?:

Favicons are not assigned to the individual URL shortcuts in registry. But you can say in URL shortcut where to find favicon.

Here is example of my bookmark - shortcut for http://vivisimo.com/ generated by Favorg:

Code: Select all

[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://vivisimo.com/
IconIndex=0
IconFile=C:\Program Files\PC Magazine Utilities\FavOrg\Data\vivisimo.com.ico
Modified=50775A220DDAC301EE
Here is example of my shortcut for http://support.dell.com/filelib/criteria.aspx which I made by hand:

Code: Select all

[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://support.dell.com/filelib/criteria.aspx
IconIndex=221
IconFile=C:\WINDOWS\system32\SHELL32.dll
Modified=C0F813113442C30116
Magic keywords are IconIndex= and IconFile=. Their usage is pretty strait forward.
