Latest silent upgrade (Build 033)

Post by robc » Tue Jul 20, 2004 8:36 pm

In the ChangeLog a su for July 14 is mentioned, but I'm still getting the previous one (sized 1,041,808 bytes) from both download sites on the download page and from the links in the ChangeLog topic... where can it be downloaded from?

Have you tried the Avant Browser Archive?

I don't keep up with these but I think that should be SU7.

Why does this SU insist on trying to connect to 216.55.160.42 on startup? :?

Reverted back to previous release.

I'm not positive, but I think that that might be the IP for the update check that Avant does when it starts.

That IP is the "forums.avantbrowser.com" site, so that is probably the case.

This feature has always worked for me, but others have said that it's never worked for them, maybe that's why you're just noticing it now. :?

According to its size SU7 looks like the July 11 SU, not the following...

Ok, now I'm confussed.

We have 8 su's listed in the changelog & you have only 7 su's listed at the archive. Did you miss one Steve?

I think I see where robc is confused.

When I right click the installer in My Computer & click properties I get 2 size values. Size = 1,041,808 bytes & Size on disk = 1,048,567 bytes. Whats the difference?

Looks like we've had a mis-hap.....

I've just noticed Crom's post (July 11th) and it appears I've missed the one between July 6th > July 11th...... so July 11th is SU7 and the one I posted is actually SU 8....... which means I'm missing SU 6

Edit

AFAIK, "Size on disk" is what it would consume when burnt to CD....... (I could be wrong though)

No, I think it's really a different file: I downloaded the 1,041,808 byte Setup file on the 11th or 12th of July and installed it, now I download SU7 from the archive or from the DL page, install it and there's no difference, even ZoneAlarm doesn't warn as it should if it really were a different binary. Also I've never seen differences between the stated sizes in the Changelog and elsewhere and those I found on my PC: the current version, whatever it is, is 1,041,808 "size" and 1,044,480 "size on disk", no trace of the 1,048,576 size... isn't it possible that the latest SU has been removed from the DL sites for some reason? BTW, what a nice size (2^20...)

Though I've no idea whats happened here, I can assure you, nothings been removed from the archive.

Drrae posted an SU on the 11th July which I presumed to be 6 (now determined to be 7), and I got a PM from Anderson on the 14th, letting me know he'd just uploaded a new one (which I thought was 7, now known to be 8).

(which I thought was 7, now known to be 8).
I had never thought I couldn't write an "eight" followed by a parenthesis :D

Thanks anyway, I 'd been away for about a week and upon returning I read the news regarding the new blocker and was eager to try it, but since the version I downloaded before leaving, on July 12 (checked the DL'd file date), is exactly the one that can be dl'd now, I'm forced to think that either the updated blocker was already there or there is a "missing" SU. Let's wait for the next...

No, nothing is changed in the Help -> About. (hence the confusion) That's why they're called 'silent' updates.

I KNEW we'd not have that much to wait... any news about the "reworked" blocker? This last SU is indeed different from the previous, but I've yet to see any difference.

I've always assumed the the first figure to be the actual size of the file and the second to be the room it takes up on your hard drive, bearing in mind that the storage of the file isn't perfectly efficient.

Therefore it's the first figure that identifies the the file. I assume the second one can vary depending on factors like the file system and cluster size of your disk.

I'm not certain about this but it seems to make sense.

Correct, mate!

The cluster size's often 4KB..and you can notice that the "second" value gives no rest if divided by 4! ;)
If I die I have to go before Crom and he will ask me:
"What is the rule of Steel?"
And if I don't know it, he will cast me out of Valhalla and laugh at me!
That's Crom, strong on his mountain..

Maybe the silent updates could be indentified by the month and day instead of a chronological number? Might this help?
