Google Talk is online!

Post by André » Thu Aug 25, 2005 1:36 am

After days of speculation, Google has officially launched Google Talk!

Google Talk enables you to call or send instant messages to your friends for free–anytime, anywhere in the world. Google Talk is simple and intuitive to use. There's no clutter, no pop-ups, no unnecessary software to install. Talk also features some interesting VoIP features like Skype. Google Talk uses the Jabber protocol however instant messaging members of other clients doesn’t appear to be supported.

There's no Linux or Mac client yet, but there are guides to connecting to the protocol on iChat, Gaim, and Trillian.

I've already signed up--it works pretty well. Want an invite? It's neat when you hve a mike so you can talk instead of type.

*shrugs*

Nothing any better or special than the other IM clients.. think I'll pass on this :)

My feelings also. There are already too many IM clients in the world - which is why I use Trillian. If this thing catches on as an easy-to-use VoIP client to rival Skype though, then it has a future.

Does it make sense to integrate IM with VoIP though? In one way it seems to - you can see who is available for a voice call by using the IM client. But that isn't really how people use voice calls. And while integrating IM may help the Google Talk voice spread, it's up against the problem that most computer users already have a favorite IM client and/or service.

It uses the jabber protocol which can also communicate with AIM, MSN, Yahoo, etc. with components installed on the server. If Google implements this, they may have more comvertors.

The question you've got to ask yourself is not whether or not it's going to be popular but is instead, what Google are going to do to (yep to) the users of this?.

Lest we not forget the caveats of GMail, GDS et al

I would've bet the universe that you were going to say something like that. I really don't care what Google does with general chats. I surely wouldn't do any type of business transactions using any sort of IM protocol.
