[INFO] Opera removes adware/licence fee

Post by MysteryFCM » Tue Sep 20, 2005 9:38 am

Just an FYI ...
Feel Free: Opera Eliminates Ad Banner and Licensing Fee
Oslo, Norway - September 20, 2005

Opera Software today permanently removed the ad banner and licensing fee from its award-winning Web browser. The ad-free, full-featured Opera browser is now available for download - completely free of charge – at http://www.opera.com.

"Today we invite the entire Internet community to use Opera and experience Web browsing as it should be," said Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. "Removing the ad banner and licensing fee will encourage many new users to discover the speed, security and unmatched usability of the Opera browser."

Opera was previously available free of charge with an ad banner. Users had the option of paying a licensing fee to remove the ad banner and receive premium support.

"Opera fans around the globe made this day possible," said von Tetzchner. "As we grow our userbase, our mission and our promise remain steadfast: we will always offer the best Internet experience to our users - on any device. Today this mission gains new ground."

I guess I don't need all of those free licenses they gave away on their anniversary now, huh? I hadn't even gotten around to seeing if I'd like it better without the ads.

I like how they're trumpeting it like it's the first time it ever happened.

I had like 20-30 keys. Looks like I don't need them now. (not like I ever really wanted them in the first place)

I did, its actually a pretty cool browser without all the adverts. I had tried version 7 a while back but that was a total mess. I was impressed with vers 8 though.

Anderson must work harder now :)

Anyway, it's nice that we have 2 great, safe and free browsers now - Dr. Orca and Opera.

indeed, i've also tried Opera for the first time in my life, now it's free. I think we can start a discussion now from things we find handy in Opera and try to implement them in AB. I think a free Opera really will push Anderson forward into making even a better browser. Cause Opera is really better then FireFox en sure better then IE.
I have to do some more testing to know whether Opera is better then AB, but i don't think so at first glance, though, i think we could learn some things from Opera.

Not that impressed with Opera though. For some reason or another.. I can't log into gmail or google adsense with it... keeps returning an "invalid login" error. Yet in FF and AB I can log in just fine.
'Minimal collateral damage' and 'entire star system' do /not/ belong in the same sentence.

This is not "Opera bug forum", Anderson can't fix it.

That's (probably) not a bug.
Sounds like a yet another "W3C standards incompatibility" ;).

I've tried this free Opera too, but I don't like it, I miss many possibilities...

I think Avant - and new Dr. Orca (from Anderson) is much better - safe as FF, features as Avant :)

Can use Gmail fine with Opera - and even get my mail as an RSS feed within it, which is a nice feature.
