eBay: Do you read before bidding/buying?

Post by MysteryFCM » Sun Mar 13, 2011 12:49 am

Sites such as eBay are extremely useful for finding that wonderful collectable, part or a multitude of other things you've been meaning to and wanting to, buy for yourself.

Sadly however, as with many other sites, there are those on these sites, that are doing as much as possible, to part you with your money. There are millions of legit users on there, just like yourself, but don't forget - there's also scammers and other questionable people on there, and unless you read things properly before bidding/buying, you could end up being stung.

For example, you wouldn't be too happy if you bid on what appeared to be a very cheap laptop, only to note when it arrived, that it was actually just a photo of the laptop (the familiar "exactly as pictured" scam).

Cheers, Steve.
I take it that ebay do listen and will correct the errors.
Whenever l view ebay l keep in mind that some of the sellers are trading from the...shall we say less reputable countries.

Bleedin figures :(

They never took the money? Unless I'm mistaken, you've got to pay them when you win the action or click the Buy It Now (within a certain time frame anyway), certainly before the seller sends anything out. Did they refund it or not actually require you pay anything at all?

When I go to the bay for stuff, I seldom browse items by sellers I am not familiar with. For someone to be qualified they should be either referred by a friend or tried by myself. It is very difficult to transact online as they could just be using a bogus account with faux details. And it is sad that scamming has gone to a different level. I really pity those who were taken advantage by those exactly as pictured advertisements.

Unfortunately, the issue outlined here is only the tip of the proverbial iceburg. Scammers etc, have long been stealing passwords for legit eBay accounts, and using those accounts to scam people aswell.

Auction sites, and indeed, all commercial sites, will always have a certain risk element associated with them, as there's simply no reliable way to determine that a site/seller is indeed, safe anymore. SSL has been broken, accounts are constantly being compromised. All we can do until a solution is found, is be extra cautious about who we deal with online, and where possible, only deal with those that have verifiable "offline" details (i.e. businesses with brick and mortar stores).

Don't know much about eBay, but I have heard that they rate sellers sales reputation i guess you would call it. Like a guide on wherether you would want to buy from this person.
